City Offers Assistance with Energy Costs and Winter Heating Bills

The City of Alexandria Department of Human Services is accepting applications for the 2007-2008 Winter Fuel Assistance Program now through November 9. Financial assistance is available to eligible low-income households to help pay for the primary fuel used to heat the home. Income and resources of all household members must be verified. Eligibility and benefit amounts will be calculated by the Virginia Department of Social Services during the month of December.

All applicants will receive written notice of eligibility and benefit level by late December 2007. Benefits are based on household size, income and type of fuel. In most cases, payments are made directly to the energy provider. Eligible households may also receive assistance with repair and replacement of inoperable heating equipment. Applications for assistance may be obtained at the Department of Human Services, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave., Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To request an application by mail, please contact Howard Pivec at 703.838.0971.
