Alexandria to Mark Remembrance of Holocaust with Civic Ceremony on April 17

The City of Alexandria will observe the Days of Remembrance of the Holocaust with a civic ceremony at noon on Wednesday, April 17, in Market Square, 301 King Street, Alexandria. The ceremony is open to the public.

The City's commemoration is the only civic ceremony marking the Days of Remembrance by a local government in Metropolitan Washington. Alexandria has held a Day of Remembrance, known internationally as Yom
Hashoah, every year since 1988.

At the ceremony, Mayor Kerry J. Donley will deliver a City Council proclamation designating the week of April 14 in Alexandria as Days of Remembrance of the Holocaust.

Two survivors of the Holocaust and Alexandria residents, Mrs. Charlene Schiff and Mrs. Ruth Greifer, will present personal memories of
the Holocaust.

Mayor Donley, Members of City Council, and City Manager Vola Lawson will light six candles in memory of the six million Jews and others who perished in the Holocaust. Invited guests include Congressman James P. Moran and state and local elected officials.

Also participating will be the Rev. Dr. James B. Goodwin, pastor, Trinity United Methodist Church, Alexandria; Rabbi Tracy Guren Klirs and Rabbi Jack L. Moline, Agudas Achim Congregation, Alexandria; and Rabbi Arnold Fink, Beth El Hebrew Congregation. Dr. Ramon Tasat, Chazzan, Agudas Achim Congregation, will present a song of remembrance.

The Alexandria ceremony is being held in conjunction with civic observances planned throughout the nation during the week of April 14 to commemorate the six million Jews and other victims of Nazism who lost their lives during World War II. The commemoration of Yom Hashoah by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, at the
Capital Rotunda, in Washington, D.C.
