Alexandria Hosts Annual George Washington Birthday Parade,
Police Advise of Street Closings and Parking Restrictions
On Monday, February 19, Alexandria will host its annual George Washington Birthday Parade in celebration of the 269th anniversary of the first president’s birth. The parade, which begins at 1 p.m., will be led by the Alexandria Police Department’s Motor Unit and Honor Guard, and will also include the Special Operations Team, K-9 Unit, Bicycle Patrol, and specialized police vehicles.
To accommodate parade marchers and watchers, some streets in Old Town will be closed to vehicular traffic. On Monday, February 19, from noon until the parade ends around 3 p.m., no traffic will be allowed on the parade route, which follows:
assembly in the area of South Saint Asaph and Wilkes Streets
procession north on South Saint Asaph Street to Queen Street
east on Queen Street to North Royal Street
south on North Royal Street to King Street
east on King Street to South Fairfax Street
south on South Fairfax Street to Gibbon Street
disbandment at Gibbon StreetWashington and Lee streets and that east- and westbound traffic may use Princess and Franklin streets. At Columbus Street, traffic eastbound on King Street must turn onto North or South Columbus Street. The Department anticipates lifting these traffic restrictions by 3 p.m., once the parade ends.Parking in Old Town will also be restricted on Monday, February 19, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., on the following streets:
100-600 blocks of South Saint Asaph Street
100-200 blocks of North Saint Asaph Street
100-200 blocks of North Royal Street
400-600 blocks of South Royal Street
400-500 blocks of Queen Street
300-500 blocks of Wolfe Street
400-600 blocks of Wilkes Street
300 block of King Street
100-500 blocks of South Fairfax Street
500 block of Gibbon Street
The 300 block of Cameron Street will be reserved for vehicles with parking permits or license plates for motorists with disabilities.
Parade participants and spectators are encouraged to take public transportation. DASH will operate a free shuttle bus from the Eisenhower Avenue Metro Station to Old Town from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the parade. There is free parking adjacent to the Eisenhower Avenue Metro Station for anyone taking the shuttle bus to attend the parade.
