City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for
Christmas and New Year’s Holidays


City government offices, including the administrative offices of the Alexandria Police Department, will be closed for the Christmas holidays on Monday, December 25, Tuesday, December 26, and Monday, January 1. Full police patrol and emergency services will be in place during these days.

In accordance with Virginia State Law, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, as well as time restrictions in residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits, beginning at noon on Friday, December 22 and continuing through Tuesday, December 26. The same parking suspensions apply on Monday, January 1, and Tuesday, January 2. All other parking regulations will be in effect during the holidays.

Additionally, HOV restrictions on Washington Street and Route 1 will be lifted for the evening rush hour on Friday, December 22. HOV restrictions will also be lifted for the morning and evening rush hours on Monday, December 25, Tuesday, December 26, Monday, January 1, and Tuesday, January 2.

The Treasury and Revenue Divisions of the Finance Department, which are regularly open on Saturday mornings for payment of property taxes and parking tickets, will be closed on Saturday, December 23, and Saturday, December 30.

City schools will be closed on Thursday, December 21, and will remain closed through Monday, January 1. Students return to school on Tuesday, January 2.

Trash and recycling collection services will be delayed by one day for the week of Monday, December 25 through Friday, December 29, and again the following week, from Monday, January 1, through Friday, January 5. This means customers whose regular trash collection day is Monday will have their trash collected on Tuesday, customers whose regular trash day is Tuesday will have their trash collected on Wednesday, and so on.

All recreation centers will be closed on Sunday, December 24, Monday, December 25, and Monday, January 1. On Sunday, December 31, all recreation centers will be closed except for Chinquapin Park Recreation Center which will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, December 23, and Tuesday, December 26, Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Patrick Henry, Mount Vernon, Nannie J. Lee and William Ramsay recreation centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open on Saturday, December 23 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday, December 26 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

City libraries will be closed from Saturday, December 23, through Tuesday, December 26. They will also be closed on Monday, January 1.

There will be no DASH bus service on Monday, December 25, or on Monday, January 1. DASH will operate its usual Sunday schedule on Sunday, December 24, but with all service ending by 8 p.m. DASH will run its regular Sunday service on Sunday, December 31. There will be regular bus service on Tuesday, December 26, and Tuesday, January 2.

State offices in Alexandria, including the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District courts, the Clerk of Court Office and the Alexandria Health Department, will close at noon on Friday, December 22, and will reopen on Wednesday, December 27. State offices will also be closed on Monday, January 1, and Tuesday, January 2.
