CITY OF ALEXANDRIA BIKE TO WORK DAY - MAY 4, 2001, 7 - 9 a.m.
301 KING ST., ALEXANDRIA, VA (CITY HALL)

The City of Alexandria’s Office of Transit Services will hold its third annual Bike to Work Day event on Friday, May 4, from 7-9 a.m. in front of City Hall at 301 King Street. This event is in conjunction with the region’s first effort to kick-off May as National Bike to Work Month. There will be information on bicycle and transit commuting, and registration of bikes by the Alexandria Police Department. Refreshments will be available and participants will be given a Bike to Work Day t-shirt and have a chance to win a new bike and bike accessories by attending the event or registering on-line at WABA.org.

"Commuters who travel by bicycle employ a clean, quiet and efficient mode of transportation while saving on the fuel, maintenance, insurance and parking costs of driving alone," said Mayor Donley. "Bike commuting improves the environment and quality of life for all Alexandrians." This is not rhetoric to Mayor Donley who will be biking to the event and then to work too.

The regionwide celebration will include four other locations: Rosslyn Gateway Plaza, Bethesda Metro Center Plaza, Silver Spring Metro Plaza and Freedom Plaza in downtown DC. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association will be leading Bike to Work convoys from 15 starting points around the region through the four suburban celebrations and finally converging at the Freedom Plaza rally. To join a convoy, individuals can visit www.WABA.org/btwd.htm to find the closest pick-up location to their home. The Alexandria convoy will be meeting at the Alexandria event at City Hall and taking off at 7:15 a.m. to head to Freedom Plaza.

In addition to biking to work, a Walk to Work convoy will be meeting at the event at 7 a.m. to head to downtown D.C., also enjoying the beautiful vistas of the Potomac River that the Mount Vernon Trail provides.

Governor Gilmore will be proclaiming May as Bike Month. Bicyclists from around the state will be starting in Richmond and taking a copy of the Governor’s proclamation to their community. The Alexandria contingency of the Proclamation Bike Ride will be arriving at City Hall on May 2 at 5 p.m. to meet with Mayor Donley in his office to present him with the Governor’s proclamation.

The Office of Transit Services is under the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services and promotes the use of transit, ridesharing, biking and walking to its residents and businesses.
