REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BOARDS, COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES None (The following items were heard together:) ORAL REPORTS BY MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL ORAL PRESENTATIONS BY MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL (a) Councilman Krupicka said as chair of the Council of Governments Aviation Policy Committee, they had a day-long meeting today with all of the major helicopter operators in the region, including the military operators, to talk about helicopter noise. He said they were pleasantly surprised to see an enormous turnout from the military establishment, who agree that helicopter noise is an issue they need to be participating in a solution for. He said they had a very productive meeting today and had five or six major follow-ups they will work to address with the military and nonmilitary helicopter community over the ensuing months and years. Councilman Krupicka said for those who have concerns with helicopter noise in Alexandria, they are making progress against it. (b) Mayor Euille said that this morning there was a meeting hosted by the collaborative Chamber of Commerce work group, including the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, the Old Town Civic Association, Small Business Development Center, KSMET and others, to further reflect and gain input in terms of getting Alexandria prepared for the on-coming of the National Harbor project and particularly the Gaylord Resort, which is scheduled to open in April 2008. Mayor Euille said he was surprised by the turnout, as there were over 125 people in attendance. He said Deputy City Manager Mark Jinks represented the City on a panel in terms of the City's perspective. He said they are on to something very exciting and positive in terms of being ready and able to meet and adjust to the needs for the initiative. (c) Vice Mayor Macdonald spoke about trash on the streets, in particular businesses cleaning the street and he noticed the enormous amount of cigarette butts on the street that were being washed into the gutter and into the sewer. He said there is a street cleaning program in Alexandria, which is great, but if it rains, all the trash ends up in the Potomac River because of the combined sewer system. Vice Mayor Macdonald said he thought they needed to work with businesses to try to work on the litter issue and what it can do to cut back on this kind of littering. He said there needs to be an education program and effort on littering, and in particular, throwing cigarette butts out car windows. (d) Councilmember Lovain said he would like to take advantage of the very brief meeting to put in a pitch for very brief meetings. If meetings were kept shorter, more people would pay attention and understand what they do a little better. City Council: 1. retained the Wednesday, April 11 budget work session date with the School Board to discuss any Schools budget issues that may be pending and to receive a presentation for Council and the School Board on the work of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria Steering Committee; and 2. received the revised calendar which includes: the Alexandria Earth Day on Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Ben Brenman Park, 5000 Duke Street; and the 2007 Employee/Retiree Health Fair on Thursday, May 24 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson Street.
